Recently I had the pleasure of attending my nephew, Eric's, Westchester spring piano recital at Wainright House in Rye, New York. Out of his piano school, Eric is currently the tallest and most experienced pianist, so his performance came last, but while I waited to hear him play, having a front seat made it a great joy for me to both listen and catch a few photos of each student performing their music. I'll be doing some artwork of Eric later on too, but today I enjoyed preparing this sketch and value study of another young pianist from the concert who caught my eye. Can't resist making her my next miniature subject in egg tempera on panel!
More information about surfaces to paint on, and answers to other questions about painting with egg tempera coming tomorrow.

Very nice sketch! I'm looking forward to seeing it painted. Also looking forward to getting the info about the surfaces. I bought fresh eggs yesterday at the farmers' market, so I might try it tonight. :)
Adorable! Also, interesting how you played with the light on her dress. I painted my first egg tempera aceo - and it has a bid on ebay! Yeah! I'm working today on a 2" square painting of Mother Teresa in egg tempera. If it turns out good, I think I'll enter it into one of the juried miniature shows. It is a fun medium to work with! Thanks Mona!
Akiko and Deb, thanks, and I am so thrilled to know you are trying egg tempera! Saw Deb's first painting, which is lovely, and looking forward to seeing Mother Teresa and your painting too, Akiko!
This is going to be fantastic, Mona!!! This may sound weird, but the part that caught my eye right away and I really love, is the reflection in the polished wood of the piano bench.
What a fun piece! How big is it going to be?
Thanks, Kathleen, reflections are fun to paint, yes.
Still sorting out the exact cropping and size, but perhaps something close to what you see here, or slightly larger.
Fantastic composition! Love the strong outline.
